چکیده

Accounting for agroforestry contributions to carbon sequestration and cellulosic feedstock production requires biomass equations that accurately estimate biomass in open-grown trees. Since equations for open-grown trees are rare and developing these is expensive, existing forest-based equations are an attractive alternative for open-grown trees in carbon accounting and biomassmodeling. How accurate this alternative is depends on how similar the key attributes, such as specific gravity, trunk shape, and crown architecture, are between openand forest-grown trees. We evaluated the use of forest-derived specific gravity for conversion of volume to biomass for morphologically distinct open-grown species: green ash, ponderosapine, andeastern redcedar. Trunkbiomasswas consistently andsignificantly underestimated from 6.3% to 16.6% depending on species, indicating open-grown trees have greater trunk specific gravity than forest-grown counterparts within the same geographic region; however a conclusive difference in branch specific gravity was not found between openand forest-grown trees. Open-grown trees have greater trunk specific gravity, sharper trunk taper, and larger crown. When forest-based equations are used for trunk biomass of open-grown trees, the greater trunk specific gravity results in underestimation; however, the sharper trunk taper results in overestimation. Studies are needed to examine whether the underestimation could be offset by the overestimation and how the larger crown affects biomass estimationwhen forest-based equations are used for open-grown trees. Our results provide an essential understanding to interpret the biometric relationship of opento forestgrown trees and to develop an efficient means how forest-based equations might be best modified for open-grown trees. a 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Analyzing the Uncertainties in Use of Forest- Derived Biomass Equations for Open-Grown Trees in Agricultural Land

Quantifying carbon in agroforestry trees requires biomass equations that capture the growth differences (e.g., tree specific gravity and architecture) created in the more open canopies of agroforestry plantings compared with those generally encountered in forests. Whereas forest-derived equations are available, equations for open-grown trees are not. Data from destructively sampled open-grown t...

Allometric equations for determining volume and biomass of Acer monspessulanum L. subsp. cinerascens multi-stemmed trees

Due to the importance of Acer monspessulanum in Iranian mountain forests, a study was carried out to reliably estimate its woody biomass and growing volume via allometric equations. Four transects, five trees in each were chosen randomly. The characteristics of standing trees including: diameter at root collar, height, number of stems and crown width were measured, then trees were finally cut d...

Comparison of Carbon and Nitrogen Sequestration in Soils Under Plantations, Natural Forest and Agricultural Farm Land Uses in Arjan Plain in the Fars Province

The carbon sequestaration by plants and soil is one of the easiest and the most econimical ways to reduce atmosphere carbon. This study was conducted on the planted land use of Fraxinus rotundifolia, Cupressus arizonica, obinia pseudoacacia L., Elaeagnus angustifolia, Cedrus libani, and Quercus brantii (persica) in the Arjan plain of Fars province. For each plantation land use, there were three...

The effect of forest degradation and land use change on some soil biological indexes (case study: Persian oak (Quercus brantii Lindl) forests in Fars province)

To understand the effects of forest degradation and their conversion to farmlands, the current research was conducted with emphasis on some soil biological indexes. In this regard, two different land use including an oak natural stand and a farm next to the forest and under cultivation since 20 years ago were surveyed. Within the each land use, three sampling plots with 10×10 meter dimension we...
